It may sound surprising, but yes, it is possible to be pregnant and not realize it right away. While most women begin noticing symptoms within the first few weeks of pregnancy, others experience very few symptoms or mistake them for something else.

In rare cases, a woman may not know she’s pregnant until much later in her pregnancy. This is known as a cryptic pregnancy.

If you’re wondering whether you could be pregnant, understanding what a cryptic pregnancy is and how to confirm whether you’re pregnant can help you figure out your next steps and options.

What Is a Cryptic Pregnancy?

A cryptic pregnancy is a pregnancy that goes unrecognized for weeks or even months. Some women don’t discover they’re pregnant until the second or third trimester, and in very rare cases, not until labor begins.

Although cryptic pregnancies are uncommon, they do happen. Experts estimate 1 in 475 pregnancies go unnoticed until 20 weeks of gestation.

Because every woman’s body is different, pregnancy doesn’t always look as expected.

Why Might Someone Not Know They’re Pregnant?

There are several reasons why a woman may not realize she’s pregnant.

Mild or No Pregnancy Symptoms

Many women associate pregnancy with nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, and a missed period. However, not everyone experiences these symptoms, and some women have such mild symptoms that they don’t recognize them as signs of pregnancy.

Irregular Menstrual Cycles

If your periods are naturally irregular, or you have a condition that causes unpredictable cycles, you may not immediately notice a missed period.

Bleeding During Pregnancy

Some women experience light bleeding or spotting during pregnancy. Because this bleeding can resemble a lighter-than-normal period, it’s possible to mistake it for a menstrual cycle.

Mistaking Symptoms for Something Else

Fatigue, bloating, nausea, weight changes, or changes in appetite can have many causes besides pregnancy. Stress, illness, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all produce similar symptoms.

Believing Pregnancy Isn’t Possible

Some women assume pregnancy isn’t possible because they’re using birth control, have recently given birth, are breastfeeding, or have been told they may have difficulty becoming pregnant. While these situations can reduce the likelihood of pregnancy, they don’t always eliminate the possibility.

What If I Think I Could Be Pregnant?

If there’s any chance you could be pregnant, don’t rely on symptoms, or the lack of symptoms, to give you an answer.

The only way to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test. If your test comes back positive, the next step is to get an ultrasound scan.

While a pregnancy test confirms the presence of pregnancy hormones, it doesn’t provide important medical information about your pregnancy.

An ultrasound can help determine:

  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
  • Whether the pregnancy appears to be viable
  • Approximately how far along you are (gestational age)

These details are important for protecting your health and understanding your pregnancy options. For example, an ultrasound can also identify conditions, such as an ectopic pregnancy, that require immediate medical attention.
