If you’ve taken mifepristone, the first drug in a medical abortion, and you’re having second thoughts, please know that you may not be out of options. There are medical professionals ready to help you right away.
Abortion pill reversal (APR) may make it possible to continue your pregnancy after taking mifepristone. For immediate assistance, contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network’s 24/7 Helpline at 1-877-558-0333. Time is critical, so don’t wait.
How It Works
A medical abortion uses two drugs. Mifepristone, taken first, works by blocking progesterone, the hormone your body needs to sustain a pregnancy. Without it, the uterine lining breaks down, and the pregnancy can no longer continue. Misoprostol is taken one to two days later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Abortion pill reversal works by introducing supplemental progesterone into the body after mifepristone has been taken. The goal is to restore the progesterone that was blocked, giving the pregnancy the hormonal support it needs to continue.
Progesterone has been used safely in pregnancy for more than 50 years, including for women with a history of miscarriage. What’s more, one study reported that pregnancies continued in approximately 64-68% of cases.
Why You Need to Act Quickly
APR is generally most effective when started within 24 hours of taking mifepristone, though some protocols may allow up to 72 hours or longer depending on your individual circumstances. It’s important to know that outcomes vary and cannot be guaranteed, but starting the protocol as soon as possible provides the best chance of success.
If you have taken mifepristone and are considering reversal, contact a qualified medical provider immediately.
