Your pregnancy decision is a serious, highly personal choice that only you can make. Your friends and family may want to provide input, and you can let them.

However, make sure that they know the decision is 100% yours. Keep reading for more communication tips. You can also visit Pathway to Hope to speak with a caring team member about your situation and receive free, early pregnancy services.

Be Open and Honest

Be open and honest when discussing your pregnancy decision and options with your loved ones. Why are you leaning toward one decision or another?

Your open communication will help them understand your situation and even offer support in some cases. For instance, if you say you do not have enough support, your family and friends might step up to help you with your needs. Sometimes we feel alone, not realizing others are more than willing to help us.

Allow Them to Speak

Your friends and family care about you. Let them speak and listen to them. Listening doesn’t mean you have to do what they say, but at least give them a chance to voice their opinions.

It’s also wise to consider what they say, even if you disagree. Listening to different opinions can help you see your pregnancy decision from all angles.

Protect Yourself

Unfortunately, some family members might be volatile, opinionated, or pushy. Pregnancy is an emotional topic. While some of this is normal, you need to protect yourself if it becomes physical or threatening.

Consider bringing someone with you for support, or talking with your family or friends in a public setting or over the phone. Put your safety first.

If they get anywhere close to abusive, you need to seek help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can help you exit an unsafe situation, especially if your home is dangerous.

The Future Is Up to You

Only you can make your pregnancy decision, but that doesn’t mean you have to decide alone.
