1. Adoption
Adoption is the legal process of the legal process that gives an adoptive couple or person the permanent rights and responsibilities of a parent to a child who is not their biological child.
There are three adoption plans to choose from: open, semi-open, or closed. Each option gives the birth mother the choice of being part of her child’s life or keeping her identity private. Here is more information about the three types of adoption plans:
- Open adoption: an open adoption allows the birth mother to choose the child’s adoptive family and form a relationship with them. Communication can occur through phone calls, letters, or regular visits.
- Semi-open adoption: similar to open adoption, semi-open adoption allows the birth mother to have contact with the adoptive family, but all communication is carried out via a third party, like an adoption agency or attorney.
- Closed adoption: closed adoption is the most private plan, as it ensures that all identifying records are sealed. The birth mother remains anonymous, with no contact between her and the adoptive family.
2. Abortion
Abortion is a serious medical decision that works to terminate an existing pregnancy. There are two main types of abortion procedures: surgical abortion and medical abortion (also called the abortion pill).
It’s important to consider the physical risks of this option. Some women experience both physical and psychological effects of abortion. Possible risks of medical abortion include:
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical treatment
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
Possible risks of surgical abortion (done later in pregnancy) include damage to the womb or cervix, uterine perforation (accidentally putting a hole in the uterus with one of the instruments used), infection, excessive bleeding, and more.
